About me - Just your average 27 year old Female Entrepreneur living her dream

Hello, I’m Julia, a 27 year old trained pastry chef; patisserie is my passion. I’ve never worked in another industry and began cooking at an early age. I recall eating the best mashed potatoes at a fine dining establishment somewhere in Scotland and thinking ‘This is amazing, this is what I want to do for the rest of my life’. I want my customers to feel the same joy and comfort that I felt that day, when eating my food.

At school I would make cakes for my friends birthdays and loved how well received they would always be. Making the cake special to them was important to me.

At 15, I got the opportunity to make and sell cakes to local people through an online service. This was fundamental for me and the experience has shaped how I like to work and learn. It led to other clients and I started getting regular orders for wedding desserts throughout that summer. I knew at this point I would start my own proper business no matter what.

I went on to work at a Michelin star restaurant and learned so much about ingredients and how a kitchen runs efficiently. I also learnt how to work quickly as part of a team. This experience gave me so many insights and really deepened my passion for food and creativity.

After college I went on to work at a highly successful bakery in Sheffield and ran the patisserie/viennoiserie section when a colleague left shortly after I started. We prepared everything from scratch using high quality ingredients. I learnt to run a pastry kitchen and to manage a small team. I have taken much knowledge about how to run a business from this experience.

After I had a baby, I decided the working environment wasn't best for me anymore; I wanted to be around to see my son grow up. Society was not built to be easy for single mothers, it is exceptionally difficult to balance work, social life, expenses and raising a child all at the same time. It is so important for me to spend quality time with my son and be able to provide opportunity for him. I know that working for myself is the most flexible way to do this.

I now run my Holloway-based small business making high-quality artisan macarons in my licensed home kitchen. Petit Pithivier was born and has grown over the first year in ways I couldn't have imagined. I couldn't be more grateful to my customers as it wouldn't be a business without you. THANK YOU!
